Nicky - our wonderful , male soft coated wheaton terrier - about 2 1/2 yrs old and 34 lbs. Rescued in April 2023.
We took him to the vet after we got him in April because the rescure people took a lot of ticks off off him and we wanted an initial checkup. He tested positive for tick fever and was prescribed doxycicline 150mg for 14 days. We do not have the 1st blood test, but PLT was very low. May 9, 2023 blood test is after the Doxycycline. In January 2024 he had a regular checkup and he again tested positive for tick fever and was given doxycycline 150 mg for 21 days. We also gave him Ferron-B12 with hemoglobine daily January to February. Since February he has taken the Ferron every other day and Cani-Tab mulitvitiamn on alternating days. He has been on Nexguard Spectrum atleast once every 5 weeks.
He eats home prepared food - 1/3 protein (chicken liver or beef with mackerel or eggs, 1/3 starch and 1/3 vegetables. He snacks on and loves all fruits and nuts.
At the June checkup, the vet prescribed internal parasite medicine and he tested positive again for tick fever.
When Nicky's bloodwork was really bad, he only showed slight symptoms. He has always been active and has a voracious appetite. I think I'm noticing a change now back to his slightly off self. So, I'm wondering if we should consider another antibiotic or a 30 day round of doxycycline. The vet here says that some dogs continually test positive for tickfever even though they don't have it.
Please review the test results. Given the positive test results for tick fever, should we be concerned?
Any help would be really, really appreciated.
Thank you so much
Chris McCall
